What we know as mathematics may be just the usual addition, subtraction, multiplication and division or a bunch of abstract numbers and symbols. In fact, there is a lot of mathematics in nature. The artists were inspired by it and created multiple installations infusing mathematics and art for the exhibition. Nature knows how to apply mathematics to form the most favourable structures or devise patterns that favour growth. Where else can mathematics be applied? The Science Promotion Unit has invited Professor Ronald Lui from the Department of Mathematics of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) to share with us the mathematics in nature and various interesting applications of mathematics in daily life, hoping that the audience would pay more attention to the mathematical knowledge around them while enjoying the artworks inspired by mathematical concepts!
