Popular Science Reading Workshop Archives (5 & 12.11.2022)

To promote science reading to a wider audience, Science Promotion Unit and Hong Kong Public Libraries jointly organised three sessions of Popular Science Reading Workshops, in which local scientists, Dr. Karen Mak, Dr. David Yu and Ms. Winsome Lee, were invited to share their popular science books and provide interesting activities for participants to experience science from the books.

1st session: Exploring Marine World (5.11.2022)

Dr. Karen Mak introduced her popular science book, explored the vast ocean and revealed the STEM knowledge behind. In addition, she worked together with the participants to make a periscope using beverage cartons.

Materials and tools required for making the periscope: two empty milk/juice cartons (around 1 litre), two pieces of mirror (one side of the mirror should be shorter than 9cm), cutter, ruler, marker pen, scissors and adhesive tape.

2nd session: A Down-to-Earth Astrophysicist (5.11.2022)

Dr. David Yu introduced his popular science book and shared his journey in doing astrophysics research as well as promoting science to the public. He also introduced various stargazing tools for participants to enjoy stargazing in leisure time.

3rd session: Deciphering Bones (12.11.2022)

Ms. Winsome Lee introduced her popular science books. Furthermore, she led the participants to identify the dead and reveal their hidden stories using knowledge of forensic anthropology in a case-detective activity.
